Parmigiano e colesterolo: tutto quello che c'è da sapere.

Parmesan and cholesterol: everything you need to know.

In our in-depth article on the properties of Parmigiano Reggiano, we discussed all the benefits this exceptional cheese brings to our bodies, but we did not mention its relationship with cholesterol. Often, incorrectly, those suffering from high cholesterol are advised against consuming cheese, but in reality...

Parmigiano Reggiano and cholesterol: what exactly is this substance?

Before discovering the relationship between Parmigiano and cholesterol, it is important to delve into what the latter is. So, what is cholesterol? It is a fundamental element for our body, as it influences many of our metabolic functions. It is a substance produced both autonomously by our body (about 80%) and introduced through diet (the remaining 20%).

However, it is increasingly common for the ratio of these percentages not to be respected. In this case, cholesterol levels rise, leading to a state of hypercholesterolemia, with possible cardiovascular problems.

When this condition occurs, cheeses are usually discouraged. But Parmigiano Reggiano has so many benefits that it would be a shame to eliminate it from one's diet. So, what can be done?

Is Parmigiano bad for cholesterol?

As with all foods, the important thing is not to overdo it. Parmigiano Reggiano, despite containing about 100mg of cholesterol per hectogram, possesses a whole series of essential properties for our body. It contains ideal quantities of:

  • Calcium;
  • Riboflavin;
  • High biological value proteins;
  • Mineral salts;
  • Vitamins;
  • Essential amino acids.

But that's not all. According to a recent study, Parmigiano Reggiano (as well as Grana Padano) helps lower blood pressure thanks to particular protein fragments called tripeptides. These are formed during milk fermentation and help inhibit the enzyme that acts on arterial pressure. Another peculiarity of Parmigiano Reggiano is its richness in good fats, i.e., unsaturated fats.

So, can you eat Parmigiano with high cholesterol? The answer is yes, but always in moderation. Obviously, for all matters concerning diet and related problems, we always recommend seeking advice from your doctor.

Now that you know the amount of cholesterol present in Parmigiano Reggiano and its functions in your daily diet, all you have to do is taste the King of cheeses produced in our dairy and enjoy its exceptional nutritional properties.
