A question we are often asked is "Does Parmesan expire?" Surely, after finding a piece of Parmigiano Reggiano in the fridge for a while, you must have wondered the same thing. That's why today we aim to answer specific questions related to Parmesan's shelf life.
We know very well that Parmigiano Reggiano is a good and healthy product, produced naturally as in past centuries, the result of processing milk, rennet, and salt. This is the reason that drives us to ask ourselves questions about the possible expiration date of the King of Cheeses.

Does Parmesan have an expiration date?
Every Parmigiano Reggiano packager must indicate the so-called "TMC" (Minimum Storage Life) on the packaging. We often mistakenly believe that this is the expiration date. But it's not. While the expiration date is a strict consumption deadline that must not be exceeded, this is only an indication that signals how long it is preferable to consume the cheese.
After this date, the product will not immediately spoil; in fact, if stored well, it can last much longer in our refrigerator. But what are the basic rules for perfect Parmesan preservation? Here are the main ones:
- Vacuum-packed Parmesan in the refrigerator can last several months;
- Once removed from the vacuum seal, Parmesan can last from 15 to 30 days depending on its aging (the fresher it is, the less it lasts);
- Store it in a cool place, inside airtight glass or plastic containers, or wrapped in food film or cheese paper, so that it does not come into contact with other foods in the refrigerator;
- Let it rest at a temperature between 4°C and 8°C.
